Professor Ted Hiebert

Ted Hiebert is an Assistant Professor in Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington Bothell. He received a Ph.D. in Humanities from Concordia University and an M.F.A. in Fine Arts from the University of Calgary. He received a B.F.A. (Honors) in Visual Arts from the University of Victoria.

Hiebert's research practice is multi-faceted, interdisciplinary and often collaborative -- spanning theoretical research, scholarly writing, art criticism, curatorial projects and artistic production in photographic, digital and conceptual genres. Current projects include:

  • In Praise of Nonsense: Aesthetics, Uncertainty and Postmodern Identity, a book project in final stages of revision. The central focus is a rethinking of the relationship between creative practices and questions of cultural meaning - seen largely from the perspective of postmodern theories of uncertainty.
  • The World Telekinesis Competition (WTC), a collaboration with artists Doug Jarvis (www.dougjarvis.ca) and Jackson 2bears (www.jackson2bears.net). The event features teams from around the world competing from their home locations to psychically influence the way candle wax melts. Documentation from the 2008 and 2009 WTC competitions can be seen online at www.noxioussector.net/wtc
  • Self-portrait Chronicles, an ongoing exploration of alternative photographic practice, framed as a challenge to possibilities of photographic and digital media, and as a series of introspections on the transformative effects of self-representation. The project has used techniques such as negative-image photography, multiple exposures, projected imagery, glow-in-the-dark paint and, most recently, the performative incorporation of animal hides as a gesture of "unbecoming." Samples of these, and other past projects, can be seen online at www.tedhiebert.net
